U.Va. slips in national ranking

But it’s still ranked as the second best public university and first among publics that are “great schools at great prices.”

The 2002 U.S. News & World Report college rankings placed U.Va. 23rd among national public and private universities, down two from last year. The October report named U.Va. the second best public university overall (unchanged from 2001), and first among publics on its list of “great schools at great prices.” In a new tally of academic “programs that really work,” the University’s experience for first-year students ranked in the top 25.

Only three other public universities are in the top 25 overall: The University of California-Berkeley (20th), and, tied at 25th, the University of California-Los Angeles and the University of Michigan. U.Va. remained in the top tier despite spending less per student than any institution in the top 25.
