January Term
Almost 300 undergraduates studied the arts, politics, the environment and more during the first January Term. David Waldner’s politics course, Nation-Building in Iraq, filled within the first 45 minutes of registration.
“I think it’s been very successful, both from the point of view of faculty and of students,” said Dudley Doane, Summer Session director and administrator of January Term. “They’re working hard, perhaps harder than they expected to be, but not complaining about it. Also what I hear from faculty: great students.”
Men of Steel
Joe Poon and Gary Shiflet (Men of Steel, January ’05) were named to the 2004 Scientific American 50 — the magazine’s annual list recognizing leadership in science and technology from the past year.
Two Brothers
Elaine Neam (Psychology ’03) gave law school a try and is now working in her mother’s health food store and deli, with plans to open her own business someday. In the meantime, though, she wants to experience different cultures, but not as a tourist. After reading about Paul Sneed (Political and Social Thought ’92) and his work in a Brazilian slum (January 2005), she volunteered for a six-month stint with his Two Brothers Foundation.
